Homeowners can be liable for slip-and-fall injuries

According to Capital One Shopping* from 2017 – 2024, the number of packages the average American received in a year increased by 78%. That being said, it is important we take care of those who help get our packages from point A to B.

We see an increase in slip-and-fall injuries during the winter months, especially on icy walkways and porches. Most homeowners don’t realize they can be held liable. According to "premises liability" laws, property owners have a duty to take reasonable steps to keep their property safe, such as clearing ice and snow, fixing uneven surfaces, or warning about hazards.

If these precautions are not taken, then a visitor (or delivery driver) has the right to sue the homeowner if they suffer an injury from a known hazard. One might think the delivery driver has a workers' compensation policy in place to cover any costs related to their injuries. That might be true, but; that doesn't stop their employer's insurance company from seeking reimbursement from you, or your insurer.

How your insurance offers protection

A Farm Bureau homeowners insurance policy includes liability coverage that can help pay for legal fees and medical expenses if a claim is filed against you. If you have your homeowner's policy with us, then the only question to ask is, "do I have enough liability coverage?". Our team can check your liability limits to make sure they’re right where they should be, so you can have peace of mind this winter!

The appropriate course of action:

Other than double-checking your liability limits, make sure to:

  • Salt walkways after snow
  • Keep steps clear
  • Replace worn doormats
  • Don’t forget our team is here to help
